Lab 8 – Monitoring & Metrics

Learning Outcomes

• Locate basic monitoring dashboards in AWS, GCP, and Linode.
• Interpret simple metrics like CPU and network usage.
• Understand the relationship between metrics and application logs.

Tasks

1. In AWS CloudWatch, find metrics for an EC2 instance you created and take a screenshot of the CPU utilization graph.
2. In Google Cloud Monitoring, view metrics for a Compute Engine VM (CPU or network) and capture a screenshot.
3. In the Linode dashboard, view the graphs for one of your Linode instances (CPU, network, disk) and capture a screenshot.
4. Visit the shared lab portal at http://50.116.28.213:31380 and click through several labs to simulate user traffic. In your notes, answer:
   • Which metrics would increase as more people visit this site?
   • What kinds of logs would you collect from an app like this?
5. Write a short paragraph comparing metrics vs. logs and why both matter for troubleshooting cloud applications.
